The novelist, journalist Asli Erdogan has been arrested in 2016 in Turkey. She was a columnist for a pro-Kurdish opposition daily. Therefore, the court charged her with being “a member of a terrorist organization.”
This collection “Down the Hill” addresses Erdogan’s novel, City in Crimson Cloak which focuses on poverty, criminality, death, and a woman who tries to survive in the darkest corners of a slum, also known as a favela, in Rio de Janeiro.
I created my own favela from the leftover materials. My main motivation behind creating this collection was to imagine that there could be colorful and joyful lives within these shelters despite the pain, poverty, and darkness. Thus, I could see these lives by lifting their roofs.
